Light snow reported on Yushan

Taipei, Jan. 15 (CNA) A dusting of snow was reported on Yushan, Taiwan's highest mountain, Wednesday afternoon as temperatures fell to -1.4 degrees Celsius, according to the Central Weather Administration's (CWA) Yushan Weather Station.

The CWA said snow flurries began falling at 3:50 p.m. and were still falling as of 5 p.m., when temperatures at the weather station reached 1.4 degrees below zero.

Although conditions are expected to turn drier, mountainous areas in northern and central Taiwan with elevations above 3,500 meters could see snow overnight if temperatures and atmospheric moisture levels align, CWA forecaster Chang Cheng-chuan (張承傳) told CNA.

Meanwhile, in light of potentially icy roads, a section of Provincial Highway 14A on Hehuanshan in central Taiwan, between Tsuifeng at the 18-kilometer mark to Dayuling at the 41.5-km mark, will remain closed from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday, according to the Highway Bureau.

Elsewhere in Taiwan, which is currently in the grip of a cold front, overnight temperatures Wednesday are expected to drop to 11-13 degrees in the north and northeast, and 14-15 degrees in other parts of the country, the CWA said.
