Taipei, May 15 (CNA) The Investigation Bureau under the Ministry of Justice held a ceremony Tuesday in which it incinerated all of the 316.571 kilograms of drugs confiscated in cases that were wrapped up in 2017.

According to a statement from the bureau, the ceremony took place at the Beitou Garbage Incinerator in suburban Taipei.

The annual ceremony takes place every year before June 3 "Opium Suppression Movement Day" and entails the destruction of all of the drugs seized as evidence for cases that were closed the year before.

A total of 5,772 bags of drugs were destroyed, including 103 kg of heroin and 240 kg of ketamine that were seized in a single drug bust in Kaohsiung in 2013.

The amount destroyed was 3.5 times more than last year, according to the statement.

Deputy Justice Minister Tsai Pi-chung (蔡碧仲) said that his ministry is committed to ridding the streets of drugs.
