São Paulo, Sept. 5 (CNA) Taiwanese martial artist Chao Tang-hsuan (趙唐瑄) has won the team's first medal at the 17th World Wushu Championships, taking bronze in the women's nandao event in Brazil.

Chao finished third among 22 participants in Brasília on Wednesday with 9.693 points, behind Zhang Yalin of China (9.746) and Tan Cheong Min of Malaysia (9.726).

A student in the Department of Sports Training Science-Combat at National Taiwan Sports University, Chao is one of 13 Taiwanese martial artists competing in the biennial tournament.

She began practicing martial arts in third grade and previously won one gold and two silver medals at the 2019 Asian Junior Wushu Taolu Championships, as well as a bronze in the group event.

The World Wushu Championships, featuring taolu and sanda as its two main categories, is the sport's premier tournament. This year's edition runs through Sunday, with more than 200 martial artists from over 70 countries vying for honors.
