Corazon Avecilla-Padiernos, the Philippines’ top envoy to Taiwan, on Tuesday outlined her priorities since taking office last October, including safeguarding Filipino workers’ well-being and deepening economic ties between the two sides. In an exclusive interview with CNA, the head of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) said both sides “have to weed out the bad brokers” who overcharge migrant workers and backed Taiwan’s plan to open its first overseas direct recruitment center in Manila. MECO, the Philippines’ de facto embassy in Taiwan in the absence of official diplomatic ties, provides services to more than 180,000 Filipino nationals residing in Taiwan.
