Taipei, Feb. 24 (CNA) Taiwan's male under-17 fencers have successfully defended their team épée title after defeating South Korea at the 2025 Asian Cadet Fencing Championships in Kuwait.
The team clinched the gold with a 45-40 win in Sunday's final, highlighted by Chen Bing-jyun's (陳秉濬) sweet revenge against Choi Chanyoung, who had beaten Chen in Friday's individual épée final.
Joining Chen on Taiwan's gold-medal-winning team were Lin Mao-xiang (林楙祥), Lee You-chen (李宥辰), and Su Min-yi (蘇敏毅).
Ding Hong-kai (丁泓剴), the team's coach, lauded the young fencers for their boldness in attacking and resilience throughout the competition despite their inexperience.
"Even when our athletes made mistakes, they were able to correct them immediately and capitalize on delayed actions to turn the bouts in their favor," Ding told CNA.
Taiwan's team épée fencers, the defending champions, entered this year's Asian Cadet Fencing Championships as the fourth seeds and received a bye in the first round, advancing directly to the round of 16.
After dispatching Qatar and Singapore, Taiwan faced top-seeds China in the semifinals, where Lin stepped up in the decisive final bout to secure a 45-40 victory.
The under-17 Asian Cadet Fencing Championships are co-hosted annually alongside the under-20 Asian Junior Fencing Championships.
The combined continental youth fencing championships are set to conclude on Friday.
