Los Angeles, Feb. 6 (CNA) One of the three people killed when a car crashed into the 99 Ranch Market in Westwood, Los Angeles, on Thursday has been confirmed as a Taiwanese national.
The incident occurred around noon near the University of California, Los Angeles, where a 92-year-old female driver first struck a cyclist on the street, then drove about a block before crashing into the store's bakery section.
The crash killed three people at the scene and injured six others, including two who remain in critical condition.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles told CNA that one of the deceased was a Taiwanese national, while three injured Taiwanese nationals are now in stable condition, citing information from local police and the U.S. State Department.
According to U.S. media, Los Angeles Police Department officials do not believe the crash was intentional. Investigators are examining whether the driver lost control due to a sudden medical or physical issue.
The 99 Ranch Market chain, founded in 1984 by Taiwanese immigrant Roger Chen (陳河源), has some 60 stores across the U.S., primarily serving Asian communities.
