Taipei, Nov. 24 (CNA) Strengthening northeasterly trade winds will bring temperatures to areas north of Chiayi County down to around 14 degrees Celsius from Tuesday evening through early Wednesday morning, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Monday.

CWA forecaster Cheng Chieh-jen (鄭傑仁) told CNA the trade winds will influence Taiwan through Friday, resulting in highs of 20 to 22 degrees in northern Taiwan and 26 to 28 degrees in central and southern Taiwan during the coolest period from Tuesday night through early Wednesday.

Cheng said the weather system will weaken on Friday, allowing daytime temperatures in northern Taiwan to rise slightly, but new northeasterly winds will move south on Saturday, bringing low temperatures of about 14 to 16 degrees across Taiwan.

Brief showers are likely on Tuesday along coastal areas of Keelung City, as well as in Yilan County and areas north of Taoyuan, Cheng said.

He noted that Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County and Miaoli County, along with mountainous regions, may see isolated brief showers.

From Wednesday evening to Thursday, moisture from the south will move north, bringing brief showers to northern and eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula, Cheng said.

He added that mountain areas in central and southern Taiwan may also see isolated brief showers during this period.

Most areas will be sunny to partly cloudy on Friday, though eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula may still see isolated showers, he said.

Cheng also said a tropical disturbance east of the Philippines strengthened into a tropical depression on Monday morning, but the weather system will move toward Vietnam and will not directly affect Taiwan.
