Taipei, March 27 (CNA) A Hsinchu City daycare center will be fined NT$240,000 (US$7,244) and its public subsidies will be ended following the death of a baby this week, according to the city government on Thursday.
The four-month-old girl who suffered asphyxiation while sleeping at a government-subsidized daycare center was pronounced dead after being sent to the hospital, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Hsinchu City Councilor Liu Yen-ling (劉彥伶) told CNA the same day.
In a press statement, the Hsinchu City government said the baby was sent to hospital on March 11 and was pronounced dead on March 24.
The city government said its Department of Social Affairs had conducted an inspection of the daycare center and held a special inquiry on March 25 to assess the incident.
The city government determined that the daycare center violated the Protection of Children and Youths Welfare and Rights Act. It imposed the NT$240,000 fine and demanded the center submit an improvement plan within a time limit.
The city government added that the daycare center will lose its qualification and subsidies as a semi-public daycare center.
In its statement, the city government said that daycare centers must "fulfill their responsibilities, pay attention to children's movements and physiological conditions at all times, ensure their safety, and prevent similar unfortunate incidents from happening again."
