Taipei, Jan. 31 (CNA) Taiwan will remain dedicated to preserving regional peace and stability while taking a leading role in promoting global peace, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said in a recent letter to Pope Francis, according to the Presidential Office on Friday.
Lai's remarks were made in response to the pope's message for the 58th World Day of Peace, the office said in a press release, which included Lai's English-language letter.
Echoing the pope's belief that war is ultimately a lose-lose situation, Lai said in the letter that "peace is priceless and war has no winners."
Lai cited the strong international consensus on maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, emphasizing Taiwan's commitment to protecting freedom and democracy.
Additionally, Lai urged international organizations to end the political exclusion of Taiwan, citing the pope's call for a new global financial framework to address the challenges the world faces.
"Taiwan is ready to take on its international responsibilities so that it can contribute and share its valuable experience through many global platforms," Lai said.
