Hon Hai looking into new reported employee death

Taipei, July 19 (CNA) Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. said Tuesday that it is looking into reports that another one of its employees in China had fallen to his death.

The company was responding to a report out of China that a 21-year-old employee had died in an apparent suicide attempt after falling from the sixth floor of a building at the company's complex in Shenzhen.

Hon Hai, known in China as Foxconn Technology Group, has seen nearly 20 of its employees attempt suicide since the beginning of 2010, with the vast majority of the incidents occurring in the first half of last year.

The phenomenon tarnished Hon Hai's reputation and forced the company to reconsider its management policies and increase wages substantially, causing the company's share price to plummet.

As a result of its problems in Shenzhen, and the area's tight labor market and spiraling wages, Hon Hai has also invested heavily over the past 18 months in facilities in central and western China.
