CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports no new COVID-19 cases Thursday
Taipei, May 28 (CNA) Taiwan reported no new cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus on Thursday, thus keeping the total number of those infected in the country at 441, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
It was also the 46th consecutive day with no domestically transmitted infections, according to CECC statistics. The last time Taiwan recorded a domestic infection was April 12.
To date, 350 of Taiwan's 441 cases have been classified as imported, while the other 55 are believed to be local infections, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who also heads the CECC, told reporters at a daily briefing in Taipei.
A total of 420 COVID-19 patients in Taiwan have recovered, while the remainder are still hospitalized, Chen said.
A group of 96 Taiwanese passengers who returned from Russia earlier this week have all so far tested negative for the virus and are currently being kept at designated quarantine facilities.
Also, due to the easing of the COVID-19 situation in Taiwan, the health minister announced that the government is again loosening its restrictions on hospital visits by family members.
Each patient can now have one group of visitors per day, with a maximum of two visitors per group, he explained, noting that the visitation allowance pertains to patients who have stayed for more than seven days in psychiatric wards, intensive care units, pediatric wards and respiratory wards.
The announcement came after the CECC loosened its restriction on visits to psychiatric wards on Monday.
According to CECC data, the global COVID-19 pandemic has infected 5,709,022 patients in 187 countries and regions, including 1,727,153 in the United States, 391,222 in Brazil, 370,680 in Russia, 267,240 in the United Kingdom, and 236,769 in Spain, with a total of 354,094 fatalities, according to CECC statistics as of Thursday.
