Over 70 suspects arrested for online gambling offenses: Police

Taipei, June 14 (CNA) Over 70 suspects involved in providing illegal cross-border online gambling services to overseas foreign nationals were arrested Wednesday, according to the Taipei City Police Department (TCPD) Thursday.

TCPD Criminal Investigation Division (CID) said that a total of 76 suspects were arrested after the police received a tip off about an illegal cross-border online gambling ring operating in Taipei's Xinyi District and New Taipei's Banqiao District.

As part of the operation, foreign gamblers would contact the service from Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar and China, and ask them to place bets. Police estimate that as much as NT$1 billion (US$33.42 million) was placed in bets in just half a year.

After an investigation, it was found that the gambling ring placed bets on overseas illegal gambling websites for its customers, the police pointed out, adding that the websites were found to be in China and in Southeast Asia.

As many as 74 computers, six surveillance cameras and a number of account books were confiscated during raids of several premises, the police pointed out.

After questioning, the suspects were sent to Taiwan Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further investigation into alleged gambling related offenses.
