French animation gets top prize in student competition in Taipei

Taipei, Nov. 30 (CNA) An animated short film made by students in France about a seven-year-old boy's acceptance of his grandfather's death at a traditional Taiwanese funeral won the highest award at an international student design competition in Taipei on Friday.

A Gong (阿公), an animated graduation film released on Nov. 1, 2018 that was made by students at the Gobelins, L'École de L'Image in Paris, depicts the boy's inner journey of finding his own way to express the sentiment of losing someone, the film's Facebook page said.

The film, produced by Liu Yen-chen (劉晏呈), Ellis Kayin Chan (陳嘉言), Zozo Jhen (鄭煥宙), Marine Varguy and Tena Galovic, portrays a Taiwanese tale hand-drawn with oil pastels, the film's Facebook page said.

Speaking of the film, Liu said a traditional Taiwanese funeral incorporates many interesting cultural aspects such as folding paper lotus flowers, burning joss paper and expressing filial piety by mourning.

Even though people from other parts of the world may not understand the meaning behind the cultural elements of a Taiwanese funeral, they can understand the significance of the ritual, Liu said of the film, which took nine months to complete.

The 2018 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC) selected 73 winning entries in the categories of product design, visual design and digital animation, the competition's website said.

A total of 20,833 works were submitted from 66 countries and regions and 895 design schools worldwide.

Out of the 73 winning entries, 30 were from Taiwanese students, including "A Mess," the top prize (gold prize) winner for the digital animation category.

It was produced by Chaoyang University of Technology students Guo Jia-yu (郭家伃), Wu Nien-chen (吳念臻), Po Ling (柏玲), Liao Tzu-yi (廖姿貽), and Lee Ki-lung (李其龍).

The TISDC, which marked its 11th anniversary this year, is organized and promoted by the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education.
