Taipei, Sept. 9 (CNA) Taiwanese film "GF*BF" has been taking the Hong Kong box office by storm since hitting theaters Aug. 28, and is scheduled to be shown in more places in Asia.
As of Sept. 6, the film has netted over NT$9 million (US$302,928) in box office takings in Hong Kong, making it one of the best performing Taiwanese films there in an opening week in recent years.
It also topped the opening weekend box office for newly released films in Hong Kong that week.
"GF*BF," by Taiwanese director Yang Ya-che, is a story about the love and friendship between three youngsters who joined the student movements in Taiwan in the 1980s.
The film stars Taiwanese actress Kwai Lun-mei and actors Joseph Chang and Rhydian Vaughan.
Yang said he is happy that both his film and the 2011 Taiwanese blockbuster "You Are the Apple of My Eye," which broke box office records in Hong Kong, have found favor with Hong Kong audiences, even though the movies approach the issue of love in a very different way.
This will encourage Taiwanese films to "move toward diversification," the director said.
"Taiwanese films are not only taking off, but bearing fruits," he said.
The film is also scheduled to be screened in Singapore next week, and in South Korea and Thailand over the next few months, said the movie company.
