Kaohsiung, Nov. 13 (CNA) Kaohsiung has won the bid to host the 2020 International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) Congress, beating Yokohama, Japan and Cartagena, Colombia, the city government said in a statement released Monday.

The ICCA selected Kaohsiung in the most competitive bidding process in the association's history, the city said, citing an announcement made by the ICCA at its 56th Congress in Prague on Sunday night.

A total of eight destinations submitted bids to host the 2020 event and the three finalists were shortlisted in May before final presentations were made to the ICCA board of directors last Saturday, said ICCA President Nina Freysen-Pretorius at the ICCA General Assembly.

All three presentations were creative and passionate but at the end of the day there could only be one winner, Freysen-Pretorius said.

"Kaohsiung told a compelling story of a city that is re-inventing itself through the power of meetings, their team designed creative concepts that will help ICCA engage more effectively with Asia-Pacific based associations, and they demonstrated great team cohesion and offered tremendous value for money," Freysen-Pretorius said.

Kaohsiung's presentation was based on the theme of transformation, calling for action to transform Kaohsiung through the ICCA Congress, to transform challenged harbor cities through meetings, and to transform goods trade networks through meeting businesses, the city said.

The ICCA is the largest international convention organization in the world, with more than 1,000 member companies and organizations in 92 countries, and the annual ICCA Congress gathers about 1,000 participants per year, it said.

Kaohsiung became an official member of the ICCA in 2014 when the city began proactively promoting the congress and convention industry and has since participated in the association's activities.

The last time Taiwan hosted the ICCA Congress was in 1992, when it played host to the 31st ICCA Congress, it said.
