Taiwan's Hsieh into Mutua Madrid Open women's doubles second round

Taipei, May 7 (CNA) Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and doubles partner Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic advanced to the second round of the women's doubles in the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament in Spain on Monday.

Hsieh and Strycova had to fight hard to defeat the pairing of Romanian Andreea Mitu and Russian Alexandra Panova 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.

The Taiwan/Czech duo led the first set 3-0, but lost focus in the next six games, including three breaks of serve, to gift their opponents the set 6-3.

However, Hsieh and Strycova regained their composure to win the second set 6-4 and took the tie-break 10-3.

They will next face off against Australian Jessica Moore and American Jennifer Brady on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's Chan sisters, lost to Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko and Russian Vera Zvonareva in the first round of women's doubles Monday.

The Mutua Madrid Open, which has total prize money of US$7.3 million, ends May 12.
