Taiwan strikes gold in badminton world school tourney held in India

Taipei, April 22 (CNA) Taiwan defeated China 4-1 to earn a gold medal in the "Selected" teams category at the International School Sport Federation (ISF) World School Championship (WSC) Badminton 2018 Sunday in Pune, India.

According to the Badminton World Federation website, the event, being held April 19-25, includes two categories -- "Selected" teams comprised of students from the same country and "Schools" teams comprised of students from the same school.

Taiwan's "selected" team did well after arriving in Pune Wednesday, triumphing over a string of opponents on Friday, including Brazil 5-0, United Arab Emirates 5-0 and India A team 4-1, followed by more wins Saturday over India B team 5-0 and France 4-1.

Taiwan's Chang Ching-sheng (張瀞升), who studies in Nantou County but was originally from the offshore county of Penghu, earned a spot to represent the country this year. When news of Taiwan's win reached his hometown, family members, sponsors, and people in the field of sports sent their congratulations.

Penghu Magistrate Chen Kuang-fu (陳光復) is expected to meet with Chang after his return to the county to give his praise and encouragement. The team is scheduled to return to Taiwan on April 26.

Teams that participated in the event come from Bulgaria, Belgium, Brazil, China, Chinese Taipei, Croatia, Czech Republic, England, France, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and hosts India, the scores on the ISF WSC Badminton showed.

India is hosting a WSF badminton event for the first time, the Badminton World Federation website noted, adding that it is "organized by the School Games Federation of India with the help of the state government of Maharashtra and under the aegis of ISF."
