'Seediq Bale' loses at Venice but dominates local box office

Taipei, Sept. 11 (CNA) Taiwanese film "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale" did not win the top award at the Venice Film Festival, which closed on Saturday, but broke the local box office record.

The epic film by Wei Te-sheng failed to bag Taiwan's fourth Golden Lion Award with a 2.5-hour shortened version to fit in the submission format.

The film received mixed reviews.

Wei said the other day he did not expect the greatly-cut submission to win since it did not include many of the scenes that reveal the characters' emotions.

Being nominated was already a recognition, Wei said Sunday through the production company. He was happy enough that the Taiwanese film could be exposed to the international community and the history on which the film was based could be known by more people.

Wei added that he cares more about the reactions from his fellow Taiwanese.

The title took in NT$23 million (US$791,200) when it debuted at 68 theaters throughout Taiwan Friday, the highest opening-day record for any Taiwan-made film.

The total box office gross could surpass NT$130 million on the first four days since the release of its first part, according to co-producer Huang Chi-ming.

A special screening in Kaohsiung will show the entire 4.5-hour version on Monday, during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

A total of 10,000 tickets that cost between NT$800-NT$1,200 were sold out long before the show.
