Taipei, Dec. 2 (CNA) A continental cold air mass that arrived in Taiwan Sunday night will send temperatures plunging to around 12 degrees Celsius across most of the country Monday night, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

As the cold air mass strengthens and moves southward, areas north of Tainan on the western side of the island and Yilan County on the east are expected to experience temperatures of 12-13 degrees overnight, while other parts of the country will see lows of 14-15 degrees, the CWB said.

During the day, highs of 16-18 degrees are expected in northern Taiwan, 21-23 degrees in Hualien and Taitung, and from Taichung to Tainan, and 26-27 degrees in Kaohsiung and Pingtung.

Meanwhile, northern and eastern Taiwan will see sporadic rain, while central and southern Taiwan can expect sunny or partly cloudy skies throughout the day, according to the CWB.

Due to strengthening northeastern winds, gusty winds will prevail Monday in Taiwan's coastal areas, including Orchid and Green islands, Miaoli, Yunlin and the outlying Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu islands, the CWB said.

The bureau said Typhoon Kammuri is unlikely to affect Taiwan directly as it moves toward the Philippines.

The periphery of the storm, however, will kick up high waves in eastern coastal areas, the Hengchun Peninsula in southern Taiwan, and the outlying Matsu islands until Wednesday, according to the CWB.
