Taipei, March 11 (CNA) Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Monday congratulated Mark Carney on his election as the leader of Canada's ruling party, paving the way for him to become that country's next prime minister.
Carney, 59, won the race on Sunday evening in the Liberal Party's leadership contest in a landslide.
The former governor of the Canadian central bank and Bank of England took 85.9 percent of the vote to beat his nearest rival, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, and will succeed Justin Trudeau as Canada's prime minister.
Asked to comment, MOFA on Monday congratulated Carney on Taiwan's behalf for winning the Liberal Party's leadership.
MOFA said in a statement that Taiwan and Canada have experienced enhanced ties on all fronts in recent years and that it was working with the major parties in Canada to strengthen their support for Taiwan and ensure the continued growth of bilateral relations.
