2019/06/26 10:54:15

Taipei, June 26 (CNA) Thundershowers are likely around Taiwan on Wednesday afternoon as the island comes under the influence of warm and wet southwesterly winds, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The CWB said the rainfall could be the heaviest in mountainous areas as well as in the Taipei basin.

In parts of the country where it does not rain, hot and muggy conditions are expected, with daytime temperatures forecast to hit 32-34 degrees Celsius in western Taiwan and 30-31 degrees in the east, the CWB said.

The bureau said a tropical depression is forming about 1,000 kilometers east of Taiwan, but it did not expect the storm to directly influence Taiwan's weather because it is moving toward Japan.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said the air quality was expected to be good in Hsinchu and Miaoli in northern Taiwan, in most of central, southern and eastern Taiwan, and on the Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu islands Wednesday.

Fair air quality was expected in other parts of northern Taiwan during the day, according to the EPA's Air Quality Index (AQI).
