Taipei, Feb. 16 (CNA) Seasonal winds will affect northern Taiwan during the weekend, bringing showers and pushing temperatures down, with rain expected to expand to the east, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Northeasterly winds will strengthen and bring showers to the windward side of Yilan and areas from Taoyuan northward, with Keelung likely to see continuous rainfall, the CWB said.

The weather bureau forecast that areas affected will see rain increase as time passes, with Hualien and Taitung in eastern Taiwan to also experience sporadic showers further into the weekend.

Cool and wet weather is expected to prevail in northern Taiwan, with daytime highs dropping to 18 to 21 degrees Celsius, but a big difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures will continue in the south, with daytime highs around 24 to 30 degrees, the CWB predicted.

Meanwhile, areas from Tainan northward, the Hengchun Peninsula, and the outlying islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu will experience strong winds measuring 8-9 on the intensity scale, the CWB said.

The bureau added the island will see warmer weather on Monday as the seasonal winds are expected to weaken.
