Kinmen, Oct. 19 (CNA) Former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) on Oct. 14 attended the annual Taro Festival in Kinmen County's Lieyu Township.

The one-day festival, organized by the Lieyu Township Office, was held at the Shuangkou Seaside Park with the aim of increasing the visibility of Lieyu taros, both across the Taiwan Strait and internationally.

Ma said it was his first time harvesting giant taros and he was impressed enough to compare the local agricultural product to 155 millimeter howitzer shells.

Besides offering taro harvesting experience, the day-long festival featured other activities such as sampling taro snacks and a taro farmers' market.

Ma also expressed hope that the planned Kinmen Bridge will be completed according to schedule by Sept. 25, 2020.

The proposed bridge will connect the islands of Greater Kinmen and Lieyu, also known as Little Kinmen, making travel in the outlying county more convenient.
