Taipei, Oct. 15 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) thanked Pope Francis on Facebook Sunday night for the greetings he extended to her, saying the country will take proactive and concrete action to support efforts by the pope and the Vatican to spread the values of freedom, justice and peace to the world.

Pope Francis asked Vice President Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) to convey his greetings to Tsai during a brief meeting before a canonization ceremony at the Vatican earlier that day, Chen said, adding that the pope also said he will continue to pray for Taiwan.

In response, Tsai expressed gratitude to the pope for his greetings and also extended her thanks to Chen for inviting the pope to visit Taiwan on behalf of her and the Taiwanese people.

Chen represented Taiwan at the canonization ceremony held at St. Peter's Basilica during which seven people, including Pope Paul VI, were elevated to sainthood. He extended Taiwan's greetings to the pope before the ceremony, the most important part of his visit to the Vatican, according to Tsai.
