Taipei, May 15 (CNA) A local shipbuilding company has been commissioned to build a prototype missile frigate for Taiwan, as part of the country's policy to construct its own warships, the Navy confirmed Tuesday.
The Navy will work closely with the contractor, Lung Teh Shipbuilding Co., to build a 450-ton prototype frigate in the first such project between the two sides, said Cap. Chu Hsu-min.
The project is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2014, Chu said at a news conference.
Chu confirmed the plan after the Chinese-language Liberty Times reported earlier in the day that Lung Teh had won the bid to build a high-performance prototype frigate, which will pave the way for the Navy's plan to add 10 to 12 such frigates to its fleet.
