U-Theatre to perform at Russian festival Feb. 22

Taipei, Feb. 4 (CNA) The drumming troupe U-Theatre is scheduled to perform at the 2019 Winter International Arts Festival in Russia on Feb. 22 as the only participating Taiwanese group.

U-Theater said it will present its signature piece "Sound of the Ocean" at the Winter Theater in Sochi, southern Russia, one of the festival's two main venues.

In addition, U-Theater's artistic director, Liu Ruo-yu (劉若瑀) will attend a seminar on Feb. 16 with representatives from Japan, South Korea, China and Singapore to discuss the development of the arts in Asia, the group said.

On Feb. 21, U-Theater said, it will host a workshop on the sacred dance movement and meditation.

U-Theatre is the only Taiwanese group invited to attend the festival, the second biggest in Russia, which will be held Feb. 14-24 and directed by renowned musician Yuri Bashmet.

The presentations at the 2019 Winter International Arts Festival will span many genres of arts, including opera, ballet, and jazz and modern music concerts. In addition, several workshops, Masters' classes, competitions and seminars will be held at the festival's various venues.

According to a member of U-Theatre, the group has performed in Russia before at the Chekov International Arts Festival in Moscow in 2005 and 2018.

The group's presentation of "Sound of the Ocean" during the 2005 festival was widely acclaimed, the member said.

The Winter International Arts Festival in Russia is a part of the European Festivals Association (EFA) and the international theatrical league "Silk Road" and is known as one of the top 20 festivals in the world.
