Taipei, Oct. 26 (CNA) National Taiwan University (NTU) is the highest ranked Taiwanese university, at 166th, in the U.S. News & World Report's 2018 Best Global Universities rankings which was made available online Tuesday.

The fourth annual U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings encompass 1,250 institutions from 74 countries, making it the most comprehensive global universities ranking from the U.S. News & World Report to date.

Leading the pack at number one was Harvard University, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University at number two and three, respectively.

Once again, U.S. universities were the front runners in this year's rankings, with only two non-U.S. universities -- University of Oxford and University of Cambridge -- making it into the top 10.

While NTU ranked 166th in the global rankings, it ranked 17th in the regional ranking of Asian universities based on 444 institutions, once again making it the leading Taiwanese university.

The only other Taiwanese university to rank in the top 500 of the global rankings was National Tsing Hua University at 370th. The Hsinchu-based institution ranked 50th in the regional review.

The only other Taiwanese university to make it into the top 100 of the regional ranking was National Cheng Kung University at 81st, while National Chiao Tung University was in 101st place.

The U.S. News & World Report ranks universities based on 13 indicators, including publications and international collaboration, that measure their academic research performance as well as number of citations in academic journals.
