Mothers to form anti-nuclear group ahead of protest

Taipei, March 6 (CNA) Nearly 200 local mothers will launch an anti-nuclear association March 8, one day before a nationwide demonstration against nuclear power, one of the initiators said Wednesday.

"We'd like to provide a platform for the public and to tell people this is not a political issue but a question of people's livelihoods," said Irene Chen, executive director of the Taipei-based Fubon Cultural and Education Foundation.

The initiators want to use the motherhood image to attract public attention and tell the public that "this public policy matters and relates to every one of us," she told CNA.

The group has set up a fan page on Facebook and will launch a website specifically for the cause, Chen went on, adding that forums on the issue are also scheduled to take place in the near future.

"The alliance will serve as an information provider, hopefully making more and more people well-informed on the issue," she said.

A Taipei-based non-government environmental protection organization has called for anti-nuclear demonstrations around the country March 9-10 in an attempt to stop the controversial Fourth Nuclear Power Plant, which is still under construction, from ever getting a green light to begin commercial operations.
