Taipei, Jan. 27 (CNA) A total of 3,979 ducks on a farm in Yunlin County were culled after it was confirmed to be infected with the highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza virus, a Council of Agriculture (COA) bureau said Saturday.

The Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine under the COA received the results of an avian flu test on Friday and completed the culling of the ducks and the disinfection of the farm in Mailiao Township within 24 hours, the bureau said in a statement.

There have been 16 cases of avian flu infections on poultry farms in Taiwan that have led to culling so far this year, with 159,621 birds culled in total. Five of them were in Yunlin.

As temperatures are expected to drop later on Sunday, the bureau is urging farm owners to keep their farms warm and well-ventilated and prevent birds on their farms from contact with wild birds that could result in additional cases of the avian flu.
