Taipei, Sept. 30 (CNA) The 2020 Taiwan Design Expo opened in Hsinchu City Wednesday, showcasing the city government's efforts to incorporate design in urban life, the organizers said.

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), who attended the opening ceremony ahead of the 11-day event to be open to the public Oct. 1-11, said she has been looking forward to and impressed by the design fair, organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Hsinchu City government.

She praised the city's efforts to incorporate elements of design in public services and infrastructure, adding that design can not only change how people live in a city, but also drive industrial innovation.

The long-term goal, the president said, is not just to let the world know about "Made in Taiwan," but also about "Design in Taiwan," since design can be an indicator of a country's strength.

Meanwhile, Hsinchu Mayor Lin Chih-chien (林智堅) welcomed people to the city to visit the event, which comprises exhibitions at several locations across the city, such as the Hsinchu City Art Gallery and its library.

The event also has a 2-kilometer walk bridging the two main exhibition areas which are separated by the railway, according to the event website.

With the theme of "Check in Hsinchu," this year's event is planned with so-called "H Monsters," parts of which can be found at various exhibitions and locations, such as a giant monster leg placed on the rooftop of the Hsinchu Bus Station.
