Taipei, April 23 (CNA) The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has been recognized as one of the world's top 100 global innovators in 2017 by data-based services provider Clarivate Analytics.

The institute was recognized by the company, formerly the intellectual property and science business of Thomson Reuters, for its excellence in R&D innovation and intellectual property (IP) development and protection.

Daniel Videtto, Clarivate Analytics's president of IP and Standards, presented the award to ITRI President Edwin Liu (劉文雄) at ITRI headquarters in Hsinchu on Monday.

Videtto praised Taiwan's leading applied research institution for its relentless drive for excellence in innovation, describing it as one of the world's leading high-tech research institutes.

"We are pleased to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the most innovative organizations in the world based on our proprietary analysis," he said.

"Our methodology, based on Derwent World Patents Index, goes beyond just looking at the volume of patents, using metrics that assess the quality of innovation (patent grant success rates), global reach (breadth of filings), and patent influence as evidenced by citations," he added.

ITRI won its first Top 100 Global Innovator award in 2014.
