Cold wave sends mercury below 14 degrees in parts of Taiwan

Taipei, Dec. 8 (CNA) Temperatures took a significant dip across Taiwan Friday as a fresh continental cold air mass arrived, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

Early Friday morning, a low of 13.3 degrees Celsius was recorded in Hsinchu, 13.8 degrees in New Taipei's Banqiao District, 14 degrees in the city's Tamsui District, 14.1 degrees in Taichung's Wuqi District and 14.5 degrees in Taipei, CWB data showed.

Daytime highs on Friday are forecast as 15-16 degrees in northern Taiwan, 18-19 degrees in central areas, 20-21 degrees in the south as well as Hualien and Taitung in eastern Taiwan, the bureau said.

The cold wave will be most severe between late Friday and early Saturday, when the mercury is expected to fall to 13-14 degrees in northern, northeastern and central Taiwan, and 15-16 degrees in the south, Hualien and Taitung, it added.

There is a chance of snowfall in mountainous areas with an elevation of 3,000 meters and above, the CWB said, advising those who plan to make the journey to see the snow to pay attention to road safety.
