Taipei, Sept. 14 (CNA) A facility in Pingtung County accused of selling food scraps to manufacturers of food products has in fact not been doing so but is in violation of the law for operating without a proper license, prosecutors said Thursday.

After inspecting the facility in Changzhi Township on Sept. 9, prosecutors said that it was collecting meat scraps for sale to animal feed factories, not to producers of food for human consumption.

However, the collection facility has been violating the Waste Disposal Act because it does not hold a waste disposal license, according to Lin Chun-chieh (林俊傑), chief prosecutor at the Pingtung District Prosecutors Office.

Prosecutors launched an investigation into the matter after they received reports from members of the public that the waste collection facility was supplying meat from diseased pigs to food companies.

According to the reports, the scrap collection facility was also supplying diseased chicken meat to producers of chicken nuggets and cutlets.

In a statement Thursday, the Pingtung Environmental Protection Bureau said the rumors were unfounded and there was no need for public panic over food safety.
