Taipei, April 21 (CNA) An annual oyster and wheat cultural festival opened in Kinmen County's Jinning Township on Friday, attracting scores of locals and tourists to experience pastoral life on the offshore county.

The two-day festival, now in its 15th year, features unusual activities such as wheat beer tasting and wheat field tours along with concerts and acrobatic performances.

About 1,000 people will also assemble on Saturday to shuck oysters as part of an annual tradition at the festival.

Jinning Township Office Chief Chen Chen-yung (陳成勇) said Kinmen has over 400 years of history raising oysters, and its oysters are known for being plump and juicy because there is no heavy industry in the county.

Oyster production has fallen this year, however, due to climate change and because a growing number of sand dredgers from China are stealing sand and gravel from Kinmen beaches, Chen said.

He added that his township is facing pressure to develop new tourist attractions, and is thinking of making better use of its war relics, traditional Minnan architecture and ecological resources to draw tourists.

On Friday, a group of students from Jinning toured the wheat fields in electric cars and experienced harvesting wheat.

Taiwanese rap duo Under Lover and singers Uni Yeh and A-FÜ will be among the entertainers to perform at a concert in the township Friday night.
