Taipei, April 28 (CNA) Nearly 100 independent tourists from China became Saturday the first Chinese to arrive in Taiwan under theexpanded Free Independent Traveler (FIT) program, the Ministryof Transportation and Communications announced that day.

The 89 tourists, who entered Taiwan through Taoyuan International Airport, were mostly from Guangzhou, Nanjing and Hangzhou cities, the MOTC said.

The recently arrived Chinese tourists will be accompanied by reporters during their four-day stay, said Phoenix Tours general manager Lee Chia-yin, who picked up a group of 18 Guangzhou tourists at the airport.

Chinese visitors from Guangzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Tianjin, Chongqing and Chengdu cities are now allowed to travel to Taiwan as independent tourists under the FIT program, which applies to tourists from China only.

The program, which was launched last June, previously only allowed Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen residents to tour Taiwan as solo tourists.

For some of the tourists, this will be their second trip to Taiwan.

One tourist, surnamed Tang, said his biggest impression of Taiwan was the convenience of Taipei's mass rapid transit system. Another visitor, surnamed Xie, said she was most impressed with Taiwan's snack and boutique shops.
