China's top negotiator tours Kaohsiung Harbor amid protests

Kaohsiung, Feb. 25 (CNA) Chen Yunlin, China's top negotiator withTaiwan, took a harbor cruise in the southern Taiwan port city ofKaohsiung Friday.

Pro-independence activists staged a protest at the KaohsiungHarbor's No. 3 pier when Chen, president of the Beijing-basedAssociation for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, arrived inpreparation for the sightseeing cruise.

Protesters, led by Chien Wen-tung, president of the Taiwan SouthSociety, held up anti-China posters and clashed with police officerswho tried to stop them from approaching the Chinese negotiator.

Chen arrived in Taiwan Wednesday at the head of a tradedelegation for a six-day investment promotion visit. Although he hasbeen to Taiwan several times in the past three years, this marks thefirst time that he has visited Kaohsiung, a hotbed of anti-Beijingsentiment and pro-Taiwan independence forces.
