Taipei, Aug. 14 (CNA) The No. 3 generator of the coal-fired Mailiao Power Plant in Yunlin County will resume operations by Wednesday after it was shut down due to a pipe failure on Aug. 1, state-run utility Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower) said Tuesday.

The No. 3 unit has the ability to generate 600,000 kilowatts of power at full capacity, according to Taipower data.

The liquefied natural gas-powered fifth generator of the Dalin Power Plant in Kaohsiung, which can generate 500,000 KW at full capacity, is also down because of a malfunction that occurred on Aug. 13.

Inspections are currently being conducted to find the cause of the malfunction, said Taipower spokesman Hsu Tsao-hua (徐造華), and there is no timetable for when the generator will be back online.

The shutdown of the Mailiao and Dalin plant generators has led to a loss of 1.1 million KW of power on the electricity grid, but that has not put the country's power supply in jeopardy, coming at a time when cloudy skies and heavy rain have pushed temperatures, and electricity demand, lower.

Electricity consumption peaked at 34.69 million kilowatts on Tuesday, well off peak demand of close to 37 million kilowatts seen on the hottest weekdays.
