Hon Hai tops global tablet computer shipment list in Q3

Taipei, Dec. 16 (CNA) Taiwan-based manufacturing giant Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. took first place in the global tablet computer shipment rankings for the third quarter of this year, according to U.S-based International Data Corp. (IDC).

During the July-September period, Hon Hai, the world's largest contract electronics maker, accounted for 22 percent of total global slate tablet shipments and 36 percent of total global detachable tablet shipments, both the highest, IDC cited data as saying.

In terms of slate tablet rankings, Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea came in second with a 14 percent share of the global market, ahead of China's Huaqin Telecom Technology Co. (about 14 percent) and Taiwan's notebook computer contract maker Compal Electronics Inc. (9%), IDC said.

IDC said Taiwan-based electronics maker Pegatron Corp. was the second largest manufacturer shipping detachable tablets in the third quarter with 23 percent of the global market, ahead of Hong Kong's Alco Holdings Ltd. (11 percent) and Samsung (8 percent).

With the exception of Samsung, these top manufacturers roll out tablet computers on a contract production basis, while the South Korean firm, as an in-house manufacturer, ships products under its own brand, IDC said.

IDC said shipments of tablets for the third quarter rose 1.2 percent from the previous quarter on the back of a replacement wave and the launch of new models from international brands, which helped manufacturers secure more orders.

However, sequential growth showed that peak season effects in the quarter were not strong enough to push shipments even higher, IDC said.

The advisory firm said demand for both high and low-end slate and detachable tablets was stronger than mid-range models in the third quarter.

In the July-September period, IDC said an increase in orders from Amazon.com Inc. of the United States and China's Lenovo Group Ltd., meant that Chinese manufacturers accounted for 50 percent of global slate tablet shipments, which pushed down the shipments of Taiwanese firms to less than 30 percent.

In terms of detachable tablets, China accounted for almost 30 percent of total global shipments as Chinese firms allocated more capacity to produce that type of model, IDC said.

Looking ahead, tablet shipments in December are expected to fall slightly in the wake of fading peak season effects, but for the fourth quarter as a whole, shipments could still rise more than 10 percent from a quarter earlier, IDC said.
