Taipei, June 14 (CNA) A spokesman for Taiwan-based Hon Hai group said Thursday that Chinese police are investigating the death in the Chinese city of Chengdu of an employee who worked in a factory there belonging to one of the group's subsidiaries.
Hon Hai said it was still trying to obtain details about the incident that occurred the previous day, including precisely which factory of Foxconn Technology Group the employee, surnamed Xie, worked for.
According to the official microblog of the police authorities in Chengdu's Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Xie died after falling from an apartment building for Foxconn employees at around 4:40 p.m.
The exact cause of the incident was still being investigated, according to the microblog.
Foxconn, a major contract manufacturer of consumer electronics for Apple Inc., Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., captured the attention of the public after a series of suicides among its Chinese employees in 2010, leading to scrutiny over the management of its factories in China.
The company has been since making efforts to improve working conditions for its employees, including cutting the amount of overtime they are required to work.
