Inmates to show drumming skills at Kaohsiung art center

Kaohsiung, May 16 (CNA) Prison inmates in Changhua County who have been trained by the renowned U Theater drum troupeover the last three years will perform at the Wei-Wu-Ying Centerfor the Arts in Kaohsiung Saturday.

Twelve detainees will participate in the show, prison wardenTai Shou-nan said Wednesday.

According to U Theater, the performance represents the strength of moving upwards and the sounds of the drums can pull people closer, while inspiring hope and power.

The performance will be centered around the theme of "the powerto embark" and additional emphasis will be on how former prisoners have transformed and restarted their lives.

One former prisoner nicknamed A-kan, who is now a U Theater drummer,said in an interview that day that he started playing the drums torelieve the frustrations of losing his freedom.

Another prisoner, nicknamed Hsiao-ji, who was once the U Theater Changhua Prison troupe leader, said he started just for fun but beganto enjoy the applause so much that his character gradually changed, sothat now he "loves being a cultural person."
