Taipei, April 18 (CNA) A workshop will be held later this week to help create an environment more conducive to the development of solar power in Taiwan, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said Wednesday.

Specialists from both the United States and Taiwan will be invited to exchange their views at Friday's event on the creation of an encouraging environment for businesses and individuals that wish to switch to solar power, according to a press statement released by the AIT.

Guest speakers from the U.S. will include government officials and an expert specializing in new financing options for solar projects, it said.

"Although Taiwan is at the forefront of solar panel production worldwide, solar power still remains a small fraction of its electricity generation portfolio," it said.

Aimed at changing the situation, the one-day workshop will feature topics such as renewable energy portfolios, electricity regulation strategies, public benefit funds, solar business models and the renewable energy credit market, it added.

The event is being co-organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the AIT, which represents U.S. interests in Taiwan in the absence of diplomatic ties.
