TSMC chair, CEO among seven ITRI laureates
Taipei, Oct. 27 (CNA) Two senior officials of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest chipmaker, were among seven experts awarded the 2020 Industrial Technology Research Institute's (ITRI's) laureates at a ceremony on Tuesday.
President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) conferred the ITRI laureate title to the seven awardees, including TSMC Chairman Mark Liu (劉德音) and company CEO C.C. Wei (魏哲家) at the ceremony, which was also attended by TSMC founder Morris Chang (張忠謀).
The other laureates included Wong Chi-huey (翁啟惠), president of the Institute for Biotechnology and Medicine Industry, Kung Hsiang- tsung (孔祥重), the William H. Gates professor of computer science at Harvard University and Yuan-Teh Lee (李源德), a professor emeritus at National Taiwan University's College of Medicine.
Rounding out the list were Simon Lin (林憲銘), chairman of contract electronics maker Wistron Corp. and Evans S.W. Tu (杜書伍), president and CEO of Synnex Technology International Corp., Taiwan's leading distributor of information, communication and consumer electronics.
The honor was conferred on Wong and Kung in virtual form because they were in the U.S. and unable to attend the ceremony in person due to border restrictions imposed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ITRI said the honorees are selected annually for their outstanding contributions to technological and industrial development. This year, the seven laureates are mainly from the semiconductor, the information and communications technology and the biotech and medicine industries who have made great contributions to the country's national development.
Liu and Wei were both selected as 2020 ITRI laureates for their success leading TSMC in the pursuit of advanced process manufacturing and driving the company's operating revenue higher, which has solidified TSMC's international status in the semiconductor industry, according to the ITRI.
