Taipei, Jan. 22 (CNA) A strong continental old air mass is expected to send temperatures down to a low of 9 degrees Celsius in coastal areas of northern Taiwan on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

As the cold air mass moves over Taiwan, daytime highs will fall to 15-16 degrees in northern Taiwan and 19-23 degrees in the central, southern and eastern parts of the country, CWB forecaster Chen Yi-hsiu (陳伊秀) said.

The mercury will likely dip to 9 degrees in coastal areas of the northern half of the country and 12 degrees in Taipei on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, according to Chen.

The weather is expected to turn dry starting Tuesday and should remain cold in the coming week while accompanied by sunny skies, the forecaster said.

Meanwhile, Chen noted the presence of a tropical low pressure system over waters near the Philippines but said it was unlikely to affect the weather in Taiwan even if it developed into a tropical storm.
