Taipei, May 23 (CNA) A weather system bringing rain has arrived in Taiwan, but temperatures are expected to remain high around Taiwan on Wednesday, hitting as high as 34 degrees Celsius, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) forecast.

CWB forecaster Liu Pei-tung (劉沛滕) said daytime highs will fall slightly from a day earlier to 33 degrees in northern Taiwan and remain at around 34 degrees in central and southern Taiwan.

"The weather is still hot, even with the weather front arriving in northern Taiwan under the influence of northeasterly winds," Liu said. "The strength of the weather system is expected to increase in the afternoon, bringing rain to eastern Taiwan."

According to Liu, heavy rains are forecast for the eastern part of the country, while sporadic showers or thundershowers are expected for northern Taiwan and mountainous parts of the rest of Taiwan.

The CWB said the weather front is also expected to bring high waves to the coastal areas in Taiwan and its outlying islands, and it urged fishing boats sailing in the affected areas to take the necessary precautions.

The bureau said the effects of the weather front are expected to be felt in Taiwan until Wednesday night, and Taiwan is likely to have stable weather on Thursday except for occasional showers forecast in eastern Hualien and Taitung counties as well as around the Hengchun Peninsula.

Temperature highs are expected to stay unchanged on Thursday before recovering to at least 35 degrees on Friday as Taiwan comes under the influence of southerly winds, the bureau said.
