Taipei, Oct. 24 (CNA) A tropical depression near Guam is likely to be upgraded to a storm later Tuesday and may move on a path toward Japan, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said.

As of Tuesday morning, the depression was located some 3,000 kilometers southeast of Taiwan, which meant it was too soon to predict its possible impact on the country, CWB forecaster Lin Po-tung (林柏東) said.

If the system strengthens as expected, it will become Tropical Storm Saola, the 22nd tropical storm of the season, and will likely to follow the path of Typhoon Lan toward Japan, Lin said.

He advised that the Taiwan public stay alert to updates on the weather system.
