Taipei, Dec. 23 (CNA) Fubon Financial Holdings, one of Taiwan's leading financial holding companies, unveiled a new award on Tuesday to honor its late chairman Tsai Wan-tsai.

The biennial award, which translates into English as the Tsai Wan-tsai Taiwan Contribution Award, will be given to individuals or groups that have made major contributions to society, Fubon announced.

It was established to promote Tsai's belief of "giving back what you take," Fubon said.

Tsai (1929-2014) was one of the richest men in Taiwan.

The award will be presented to two recipients every two years, with the first ceremony slated to be held next year, Fubon said. Winners will each receive a large sum of NT$10 million (US$314,949).

Several heavyweight public figures will be on the nomination and selection committee, including Academia Sinica President Wong Chi-huey, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Chairman Morris Chang and former Premier Liu Chao-shiuan, Fubon said.
