DPP raises millions for Japan disaster relief

Taipei, March 21 (CNA) Opposition politicians in Taiwan haveraised millions through nationwide fundraising events to assist withdisaster relief efforts for the March 11 earthquake and tsunami inJapan.

The party has so far received a total of NT$45 million (US$1.5million) via the account it set up for Japan's post-quake reliefefforts, as well as through fundraising stands the party organized in21 counties and cities in Taiwan, said DPP spokesperson Lin Yu-chang.

He added that all funds received will be sent to Japan throughthe Japanese Red Cross Society.

Meanwhile, southern Taiwan's Pingtung County has raised, as ofSunday, a total of nearly NT$1.5 million through a collaborativeeffort between World Vision Taiwan and DPP's Pingtung headquarters.

Former Tainan mayor Hsu Tain-tsair also began a drive on Mondayto raise funds for Tainan's sister city of Sendai in Japan. He hasset a goal of NT$10 million.
