Taipei, Aug. 15 (CNA) The Kuomintang (KMT) in Kaohsiung unanimously passed a resolution Thursday expelling two party members for openly criticizing KMT presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), who is also the incumbent mayor of the city.

The party's Kaohsiung chapter announced that day it had decided to revoke the memberships of former Kaohsiung County Magistrate Yang Chiu-hsing (楊秋興) and Ao Po-sheng (敖博勝).

Chuang Chi-wang (莊啟旺), head of the chapter, said the two men had frequently criticized Han in the media and online, which is a violation of party discipline.

The decision will be reviewed by the KMT Central Disciplinary Committee and Central Standing Committee, according to the Kaohsiung chapter.

Later in the day, Yang said he was handing in his KMT party membership, slamming the party for becoming more authoritarian than during the Martial Law era and not accepting other people's opinions.

Yang said he would also like to apologize to the people of Kaohsiung, adding that he did not know Han would be such a "slacker."

Yang, a long time member of the Democratic Progressive Party, who served as DPP Kaohsiung County Magistrate for nine years before it merged with Kaohsiung City in 2010, left the party when it refused to back his run for mayor of combined Kaohsiung City and County.

He joined the KMT roughly three years after leaving the DPP and backed Han in his successful campaign to end 20 years of DPP government in Kaohsiung in the November 2018 local elections, though the two men had a falling out in May.

On Wednesday, the KMT finalized a decision to revoke the membership of KMT Central Review Committee member Chen Hung-chang (陳宏昌) for saying that Han spent most of his time playing mahjong, drinking and womanizing.

Meanwhile, Han was not available for comment, but his campaign office spokeswoman Ho Ting-huan (何庭歡) said it respects the disciplinary action taken by the party.
