KMT wins mayoral election in Xinbei City

Taipei, Nov. 27 (CNA) Eric Liluan Chu, the ruling Kuomintang'scandidate for mayor of Xinbei City, scored a victory in his tightrace Saturday against the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP)Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen, who conceded defeat.

According to television vote counts, Chu, 49, had about anine-point lead with over (98) percent of the votes counted inTaiwan's most populous administrative district with a population ofnearly 3.9 million, currently called Taipei County.

It will be upgraded to special municipality status on Dec. 25 andrenamed Xinbei City.

Chu won the biggest prize in one of the most hotly contestedraces in the five special municipalities -- Taipei City, Xinbei Cityand three other soon-to-be mega cities -- Taichung, Tainan andKaohsiung.

Official results would be released by the Central ElectionCommission later Saturday.
