Los Angeles, Jan. 1 (CNA) China Airlines (CAL), one of Taiwan's leading carriers, won the International Award at the New Year's Day Rose Parade for the second year in a row with a float titled "Rhythm of Taiwan."

It was the 22nd time that CAL has won the international award for most outstanding float from outside the United States and the 28th award the airline has collected since 1987, the year CAL first participated in the parade held annually in Pasadena, California.

The theme of CAL's float this year was Taiwan's temple culture, featuring drum arrays, performance troupes, and large figures representing the child-god San Tai Zi, which echoed the parade's theme, "The Melody of Life," CAL said.

The hit song by Taiwanese band The Chairman, "The Gods Bless Taiwan," accompanied the float's display, and young dancers on the float played the role of drummers and holy officers in the world of the dead, according to CAL.

China Airlines President for the Americas Simon Lee (李献光) said he hoped the CAL float, decorated by some 500 volunteers, caught the eye of people in the U.S. and will encourage more people to visit Taiwan.

Hung Hsing-tzu (洪幸慈), an official in the Travel Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, praised CAL's float for promoting tourism in Taiwan and inspiring Americans to find out more about the island's folk culture.

According to the parade's organizer, it is estimated that more than 700,000 people lined the 9-kilometer parade route to watch the 130th Rose Parade in person and some 44 million people around the U.S. watched it live on TV.
